Mobile Phone Use By Kuwait University Students

Auther : Yousef Al-Failakawi

For the past few years, mobile phone usage has increased tremendously in Kuwait, especially at Kuwait University. This study examines Kuwait University students mobile phone use patterns. It investigates the mobile phone procurement circumstances, rationale for ownership of mobile phones, frequency patterns for sms use, and sms message compositions for both sent and received messages. It also investigates the mobile phone options of choice, and the frequency with which students change their phones.

This study supports the hypothesis that mobile phones are very widespread among Kuwait University students and finds that almost every student has one. The study also finds that a major predictor of how Kuwait University students are using the mobile phones is the student’s gender. Female students tend to be more serious in the way they use the mobile phones while the male students consider the mobile phones to be an accessory and a tool for sending love messages, harassing others and for use during exams and classes. Another major predictor is the college in which the students are enrolled, especially the College of Islamic Studies.
