Notes Concerning The European Feudal System In The Middle Ages (in Arabic)

Auther : Hayat Nasser Al-Hajji

This paper attempts to prove that the dominant theory on the feudal system in western Europe is not without faults. This dominant theory claims that the feudal system was merely an economic phenomenon, and that under that system commercial activities came to a complete halt. The truth is that Western feudalism represents a political, social and economic phenomenon, and throughout the feudal period trade with the East never ceased.

The paper confirms this viewpoint through its study of the domain system. This study shows that the domain was not a mere economic unit. It was first and foremost a social unit whose members co-operated in running their own affairs, especially the cultivation of land. They were also tied up to one another by their common loyalty to the one master of the domain.

This paper also throws some light on the kind of peasants and farmers who lived under the deudal system. Not all of them were serfs or household slaves. Some of them were free men. This point has required some digging into the origins and roots of the feudal system. And into the various degrees of freedom which were enjoyed by the peasants and farmers.

Some other light is also focused on the role of the church in the development of the feudal system in Western Europe, and on its role in the rise of the principle of feudal inheritance and the influence of this principle on the formation of the general characteristics and nature of the feudal system.
