Tutors Of Caliphs In The First Abbasid Period, 132 - 247 Heigira; 750 - 861 A.D. (in Arabic)

Auther : Mohammad Salihiyeh

This is the second paper of a research conducted by the author. The first paper has been published in the Arab Journal for the Humanities (summer 1981) vol. 1 no. 3 35 – 74. The reader will notice that this second paper compares the methods of teaching and education in both the omayad and the First Abbasid periods, Attention has been centered on three educational systems: the system of the Prophet Mohammed, the system of educating tribal chiefs, and the system of educating the sons of kings whose countries were neighbours of the Arab World.

This paper also tackles the following topics: the teaching programs and the subjects taught: methods of teaching, such as instrction, repetition induction, encouragement, rewards and punishments; methods of following up the students development and progress; the social status of tutors in relation to the Caliphs in particular and in relation to the public at large; the influence of tutors on the Caliphs, especially on their political and social behavior. The study of this influence is particularly important since this influence is somehow connected with the various currents of thought which rose in this period. Most important among these currents are;

- Heresy and racialism

- Ther case of the creation of the Quran.

- The scientific movement and its patronage.

- The nature of the social and economic life.

This paper has attempted to point out and follow up the impact of tutors on the first and second currents. As for the third and fourth currents, they cover such a wide variety of literary and scientific subjects that a thorough study of them requires that a special paper should be devoted to them.
