Social Reform in the Philosophy of Ibn Tufeil (in Arabic)

Auther : Idris El-Azzam

This research aims at explicating the bases of the well-being and decay of society from the view point of the philosopher, IBN Tufiel. Who has been judged by various writers not to believe in the possibility of reforming a corrupt or decayed society.

The responsibility of social reform is not, according to ibn Tufiel, the responsibility of the masses, for they are inherently and mentally incapable of effecting such a reform. Social reform is, to him the responsibility of the elite groups in society, whose members are capable of affecting social reform, because due to their wide acquired knowledge and their inherent mental abilities they recognize the corruption of society and the necessity of change and reform. Among the elite groups in society are philosophers, religious leaders, and rulers who inherently love goodness. It is ibn Tufiel’s contention. However, that social reform is well beyond the ability of any single group. Thus, in order to achieve social reform, all the elite groups in society must co-operate and work together and the work of each group must complement to work of the other groups.
