Auther : Mustafa Abood

The aim of this paper is to confirm the presence of the spirit of nationalism and militancy in contemporary poetry in Yemen. The introduction emphasizes the close connection between regional and national consciousness among the pioneers who led the revolution of 1948 in sanaa, most of those pioneers were poets. The introduction includes the testimony of the Iraqi writer Hilal Naji and the Yemeni poet Abdul Aziz Al makalih.

The present study attempts to highlight the nationalist dimension in the contemporary poetry of Yemen. Five topics are clearly dealt with:

  1. Palestine and the imperialist West.
  2. The struggle of the Arab Maghreb of North Africa.
  3. Arabism in Egypt.
  4. Arab unity and the return to Palestine.
  5. The resistance pact among the present generations.

The last poem to be selected is that of the poet Abdulla AlBardouny titled Abu Tammam and Arabism of today it is the very popular masterpiece which impressed the mosul Festival and proved to the Arab poets present there that Yemen possesses great poetry which combines the excellencies of both the past and the present. Its traditional form is capable of embodying the new spirit and its modern content finds proper expression in the old conventional lines.
