The Second Ottoman Siege of Vienna (1683) (in Arabic)

Auther : Sayyar K. Al-Jamil

The second Ottoman Siege of Vienna, the Hapsburge Capital (July 17th- Sept. 12, 1683) is one of the most important historical events in the seventeenth-century.

The first Ottoman siege of Vienna (Sept. 27Oct. 15, 1529) is considered the climax of the Ottoman Military movements in Europe, when the Ottoman Empire was at the peak of its power in the sixteenth century.

After the sixteenth century the ottoman Empire entered a period of deterioration and decline. The Ottoman war with Austria covered the period 1682-1699 to the Ottomans this was a defensive war. The only exception was the Ottoman campaign against the Hapsburgs, when the grand- vizier Qara Mustafa pasha led his armies and besieged Vienna, the strategic capital in the heart of Europe.

The historical experience of the Ottoman Politicians led them to believe that leopold 1 of Austria would not receive substantial help from outside and that he would definitely not be supported by the poles and the other Christians in Europe. But the Emperor Leopold I formed a new European coalition to resist the Ottoman threat. His most important ally was Jan Sobieski of Poland. Pope Innocent XI appealed widely for a new Christian crusade against the Ottomans Men and money for the Hapsburgs came from Portugal, Spain, and Poland and from various princes in Germany.

The only serious historical mistake the sultan and qara Mustafa pasha made was that they did not restrict the campaign to Hungary but marched on to besiege Vienna. Qara Mustafa pasha was entirely responsible for the failure at Vienna. Therefore he was dismissed and executed at Belgrade (Dec. 15, 1683).
