Industrial and Agricultural Flourish in Western Sudan After the 5th Hegira Century, as shown in the Islamic Arabic Reference Books (in Arabic)

Auther : Dreid Abdul-Qader Nouri

The absence of military and social barriers in Southern Sudan, in addition to the Arabs interest in trade and their enthusiasm to spread Islam in the world, were factors which led to their opening of Western Sudan, South of preset day Morocco. The land of Western Sudan is part of the Greater Sudan, a term employed by Arab historians in reference to all the lands south of Great African Sahara which extends from the Red Sea in the East to the Atlantic in the West.

The inhabitants of Western Sudan had led a primitive life before the arrival of the Arabs. In their backward agriculture and primitive industry, the locals had no sense of a coherent family. Likewise, they had no idea of government and organized state.

However, with the beginning of the 4th century A.H (10th A.D) these primitive people became acquainted with a new trend of life with its fresh cultural and social aspects derived from the spirit of Islam. The Arabs mingled with locals through marriage and trade intercourse, and soon a number of the local inhabitants reached high military and administrative positions in the new system.

The Moslem Arabs, thus, started enriching the Sudan with all forms of knowledge. New industrial and agricultural methods were introduced, commerce developed and soon Sudan became an integral part of the nation.
