The Egyptian Administration in Syria and the Rise of the Palestine Question (1831 - 1840) (in Arabic)

Auther : Amin Abdullah Mahmoud

This study is intended as an ivestigation of the main characteristics of the Egyptian administration in Syria. The rise of this administration was considered to be the first genuine attempt to introduce the concept of a modern state with its various techniques and structures. These included substantial modernization and reform of Syrias socio-economic structure, administrative system and its world status. Syrias traditional feudal system had been weakened and gradually replaced by a more progressive social system that led to the rise of a cultural and intellectual movement.

Ibrahim Pasha, as a supreme power of the armed forces and civil administration, was the moving force behind these changes and reforms. He, himself, dealt directly with many administrative matters such as modernizing the taxation and judiciary systems.

The study also deals with the genesis of the Palestine Question and its emergence of the international arena as an outcome of the Egyption rule in Syria. England and some other Western countries reached a conclusin that creating a Jewish state in Palestine would be the only way to block any future Egyptian attempt to expand toward the Arabs East, such as that of Mohammad All and his son Ibrahim Pasha.

In dealing with this subject, the study made use of various primary sources such as documents, memoirs and official reports. Secondary sources in Arabic and foreign languages have been also consulted.
