Voiceless and Voiced Sounds in Relation to Meanings in Arabic Antonyms (A Statistical Study) (in Arabic)

Auther : Ahmed Talaat Suliman

This study aims at finding out the relations, if any, between sound (The voicing feature) and meaning. A random Sample of 210 couples of Arabic antonyms was isolated to be tested.

The study is divided into an introduction, three chapters and an appendix.

In the introduction we introduced a description of the data and we defined our terminology. The method and the hypothesis were also introduced.

In chapter one, we discussed the theories put forward to the effect that language is an arbitrory system indicating no relations between sound and meaning. We conduded this chapter by proposing that the justification for the above is not sufficient.

In chapter two we introduced the statistical results which were obtained after distributing our sample according domination of ± voicing and the distribution of the sample into four categories of meaning, i.e. States, Qualities, stands and Converses. This chapter was concluded by the introduction of Chi-square calculation for the observed against tabulated Chi-square values. The null hypothesis was accepted a rejected according to the out come of the comparison.
