Self-Esteem, Its Relation to Parental Upbringing and Emotional Security (An Etiological Study) (in Arabic)

Auther : Alaa Eldin Kafafy

The study investigates the relation between self-esteem on one side, and parental upbringing and emotional security on the other side as etiological variables. Subjects are 153 female students in secondary schools some Qataries and some other Arab nationalities, with a mean age of 16.6.

The theoretical background of the study consists of three categories of bases: first, self-esteem theories like Rosenberg, Coopersmith and Ziller; second, some general theories of behaviour like Eriksons theory on psycho-social development and Maslows theory on the hierarchy of needs; and third, some empirical studies like Felker works on construction of the positive aspects of self.

The main idea of the study i that parental upbringing as perceived by the individual influences his self-esteem, and this influence works through his feelings of emotional security. Thus, the study has three hypotheses: (a) there are positive relations between normal or correct parental upbringing styles and emotional Security; (b) there is positive relations between emotional Security and self-esteem; and (c) there are positive relations between normal or correct parental upbriniging as perceived by the subjects and their self-esteem scores.

The study has used parental upbringing questionnaire developed by the author, emotional security scale of Maslow and a short form of self-esteem scale of Coopersmith. The results confirmed the three hypotheses of the study, emphasizing the validity of its theoretical basis.
