The Demography of Saladin's Armed Forces (in Arabic)

Auther : Said Abdul Fattah Ashour

In many symposia and academic conferences held, in the last two years, in celebration of the 800 aniversary of Saladins Victory at Hittin and his restoration of Jerusalem from the Crusaders, we have noticed that researchers have committed some historical errors, due perhaps to their enthusiasm or to their feeling of pain resulting from the dangers from which our Arab nation suffers at present.

The most remarkable of these errors is, perhaps, the confusion over Arabism and Islam, and analgamating them, the one into the other, completely and absolutely, then ascribing Muslems victories over the Crusaders exclusively to the Arabs, and their heroes to Arab ones. This would be gross misrepresentation of historical facts, divergence from historical reality, and overburdening history.

In this paper we have attempted to put things in order, to give a perspective more appropriate and approximate to the historical truth of patriotic movement during the Crusades epoch, and to throw light on the reality of the human make-up of Saladins armed forces in this movement, as well as on the real motives behind the victories achieved by these forces.
