A Generative Transformational Study of the Masdar Structure in Standard Arabic (in Arabic)

Auther : Lubana Mushawah

The theoretical framework of this research is that of Generative Grammar. It takes advantage of the general principles of the Government & Binding Theory (Chomsky 1981) in studying the properties of the structure in which appears the Masdar that assigns genitive case to the noun phrase (NP) it governs immediately.

We assumed initially that the Masdar adjoined to its object has an empty subject pronoun within the subject NP. Then, relying on the language data, we also assumed that this NP subject precedes the Masdar at deep structure. We also argued on the basis of theoretical and empirical facts in favour of a transformational rule that applies to the Masdar moving it to the right of its subject, allowing it therefore,to govern and assign case to the NP morphological subject according to the case filter. We argued that this rule does not apply when the subject is an empty pronoun. Therefore,an adjunction relation holds between the Masdar and the following NP object.

We finally suggested that this result can be generalized to verbal sentence in which the verb precedes its subject in surface structure. In other words, the surface word order SVO might be obtained from a basic order SVO. This might help in explaining some aspects of the standard Arabic syntax and simplify the Arabic grammar and making it more suitable for modem needs. By giving individual researchers a useful tool for identifying and explaining the continually changing literary genres, the present scheme hopefully accords sound judgement and acumen their due place in literary scholarship, while venturing to put literary history on a new track.
