Islamic Intelligence & Reconnaissance During the Era of the Pious Caliphs in the East (in Arabic)

Auther : Ahmad Mohammad Odwan

This paper highlights the role played by intelligence and reconnaissance in Islamic wars in the era of the Pious Caliphs and how the data collected by that group and presented to the leadership was a basis for determining the military tactics.

It also indicates the conditions that such men should fulfill, types of information they were keen to gather and the caliphs eagerness to the need of spreading intelligence and reconnaissance in the enemys territory. It also deals with various examples of the movement of the Muslims intelligence and reconnaissance in the enemys territory with the assistance of the guides and tribes dwelling in the border land. The paper also shows the sneak attempts of the enemy in the same field and the procedures adopted by Muslims to prevent such a creep into their lands by means of spreading guards and ambuscades. It also sheds the light on the Muslims capability for maintaining the secrecy of their movements and the use of a password in their battles or movements.

Despite the above procedures, the enemys spies succeeded in penetrating the Islamic front and were able to collect data that was a reason for the Muslims defeat in some of their battles. Not only were Muslims aware of the existence of such people among them, but they could have also, in most cases, arrested them. Such spies were well treated by Muslims, who were trying to make use of them during interrogation. They succeeded in converting many of them to Islam through the temptation of offering them assistance and security to their families.
