The Foundation of Bait Al-Māl in the Muslim State (in Arabic)

Auther : Abdel-Azeez Al-Halaabi

There are many authentic traditions, which assert that the Phrophet (PBUH) lived in poverty and austerity. In addition to that, some early Muslim historians stated that Bait AI-Ma I or the public treasury was only founded in the era of the second caliph Umar b. AI-Khattab. Against this background, this paper has taken upon itself to examine the financial affairs of the Prophets State to see if there was a public treasury in this stage of history. In doing so, it found out that the income of the State depended on several sources the most important of all was the booty. This source became specially significant after the defeat of the Jewish tribe of Banu Al Nadir (4 A.H./ 625 A.D.) and later on the conquest of the fertile province of Khaybar (7. A.H / 628 A.D.). Consequently, the Muslim State had a relatively stable income.

The Prophet (PBUH) appointed some of his companions as keepers of the treasury. This study gathered several evidences, which led to the conclusion that Bait AI-Mal existed in the Prophets State.
