The Development of a Scale of Measure Attitudes Towards to Mentally Retarded Persons (in Arabic)

Auther : Yousef F. Qaryauti

Recently, various authorities in Bahrain and most of the Arab States have shown a great interest in the welfare of the handicapped. This interest can be seen through the establishment if different kinds of special education and rehabilitation program. The general goal of all types of remedial and rehabilitative services is to improve the handicap abilities for opportunities of integration as well as full participation in society.

To develop the Scale, 38 items were chosen from a pool of items constructed for this purpose. These 38 items were given to three expert judges to evaluate the appropriateness of each item. According to the feed back from the judges, six items were deleted. The 32 item lefts were tested in a sample of 147 male and female subjects of different educational and social levels as well as different age groups. Correlation coefficients between each item and other items and with the total score were then computed. Items with low correlation coefficients were deleted. The 22 items that achieved high correlation’s were retained and composed the final scale. Based on the 22 items a new total score for each subject was calculated. Then correlation coefficients between each item and the correlation coefficients between items and the total score.

The results of this study suggest that the constructed scale proved to be valid and reliable. These results provide strong evidence of the appropriateness of the scale to measure the attitudes toward the mentally retarded.
