The Value of Poetry In The View of Mu'tazila in the 4th Century, Higri (in Arabic)

Auther : Karim AI-Wa'ili

In this study I deal with the value of poetry in the view of Mutazila. They shed light on the value through two contradictory methods. One of them is an attempt to define the elements of value from outside the poetic text, and the other, on the contrary, approaches the definition of the principles on the basis of the poetic text itself.

In the external elements of the value, particularly ideally, the outward feature becomes the standard of evaluation by which both the excellence and the value of the poetry are defined. In this case, the value is subject to certain intellectual rules and to the concept of favourable and unfavourable comments. Likewise the standard goes beyond the impressionistic critical rules, reaching to the principles by which the value is to be judged.

As for the value in the light of inward elements, the characteristics of the poetic text itself, or the content of a given poem decides its goodness. The critics, there-fore, turn to the language systems that consist all of syntax, morphology and phonetics. They aim at pursuing the elements of beauty and meaning within the poetic text.

Although these systems have some doctrinal traits of the Mutazila, and some-times the doctrines are concealed, the systems are in general harmonious with Mu-tazilan common thought: the goodness or meanness of the human behaviour should be ascribed to the feature of the behaviour itself.
