Is Iago an Atheistic Existentialist?

Auther : Richard A. Andretta

lago is one of the most controversial characters in Shakespeare. Critics have disagreed about his motives. This paper reviews the critics opinions about him and argues that lagos character, actions, and motives can be studied in the light of the philosophy of Atheistic Existentialism as found in Sartres essay entitled Existentialism. Although Shakespeare wrote Othello at the beginning of the seventeenth century, the modem reader with an average knowledge of Existentialism can interpret lago as an Atheistic Existentialist since he advocates rejection of God and all moral values.

This paper also shows that lago is the product of his age and society. The Renaissance was greatly influenced by Machiavellis writings, the new scientific spirit and the rise of individualism, which led to a pervasive materialistic view of life.
