Marriage & Divorce Rates in Kuwait & Other Countries: A Comparative Study (in Arabic)

Auther : Fahed T. Al-Thakeb

Studies about divorce in Kuwaiti society are rare. This study is an attempt to compare marriage and divorce rates in Kuwait with those of other countries throughout the world. The primary source of data is the United Nations Demographic Year Book (1990). In general the statistics represent a good measure for comparison. These rates, however, have their limitations in several countries, since the number of marriages and divorces varies according to legal, religious and political factors. Despite these limitations, comparisons of marriage and divorce rates among the countries over time gives us a better understanding of marriage and divorce.

Crude divorce rates in Kuwait have not changed drastically since 1971. These rates are lower than those for Egypt, and similar to those for Bahrain and Indonesia. They are higher, however than divorce rates for Syria, Turkey and Iran. In comparison with Western countries such as the USA, Canada, Britain, France and Australia, the Kuwaiti rates are much lower.
