The Political Role of Sheikh of Islam Takii El-Din Ahmad Ibn Taimeya (in Arabic)

Auther : Amal Hamed Zayan

El Sheikh Takii El Din Ahmad Ibn Taimeya (661-728 H/ 1262-1327 AD) was famous for his great academic role in the fields of teaching, writing and fatwa (giving legal advisory opinions). However, his political role was not less important than his religious and academic ones. In spite of this fact, scholars did not give his political role its due attention as Sheikh Takii fought the Mughals who repeatedly invaded Syria especially Damascus. He took part in one of the famous battles, the Battle of Shaqhab, bringing victory to Sultan El Nasser Mohamad over the Mughals.
This paper sheds light on El Sheikh Takii El Din Ahmad Ibn Taimeya’s political role in struggling against the Mughals starting from his trials to save Damascus from their barbarity, sabotage and breaking their promise of safety of people of Damascus, as well to his interview with Sultan Mahmoud Ghazan, the Mughal ruler, in order to remind him of the Islamic rites that prohibit tyranny and oppression and glorify keeping the pledge. The paper also shous the many he urged Sultan El Nasser Mohamad; the Sultan of Egypt and Syria, to fight the Mughals. His greatest part manifests in encouraging the soldiers to show solidarity and endure the battle while promising them victory, and in his fatwa concerning the legality of fighting the Mughals although their Sultan Mahmoud Ghazan had previously declared his Islam. As a result of his efforts, victory over the Mughals was achieved at the Battle of Shaqhab (702 H/ 1302 AD) which is considered as crucial as the victory at the Battle of Ein Gallot.
He further storve against destructive myths, unorthodoxies and doctrines which were tearing down the state. The most important achievement in this domain was his struggle against the Casrawanians, the people of Casrawan Mountain, who stood against the state, the Sultan, the princes and the soldiers and greatly rejoiced at their defeat at the hands of the Mughals in (699 H/ 1299 AD).
In conclusion, ElSheikh Takii El-Din Ahmad Ibn Taimeya lived a life of Jihad (struggle for Islam) both in the secular and religious fields.
