The Challenges of Documenting Jerusalem History during the late Ottoman Era (in Arabic)

The purpose of this study is to shed some light on the challenges of documenting the history of Jerusalem during the Ottoman Era, particularly during the nineteenth century. Historians documenting the history of Jerusalem during the first three centuries of the Ottoman Rule faced different challenges from those that are encountered in the nineteenth century. 

During the nineteenth century the history of Jerusalem witnessed political, economical, social, cultural and infrastructural changes that hindered researchers efforts in studying the issues of period. The study of Jerusalem during this are not only hard to find in one place but also accessing such resources is cumbersome. This situation forces researchers to rely on what they are able to locate and access. The present study highlights and clarifies the challenges of documenting the history of Jerusalem during this century (19th Century) that researchers had to deal with in the process of their documentation. In addition, the present study shows, in spite of all those challenges, several remarkable studies had been conducted in the last 10 years about this period.
Thus, the present study focuses on the historic studies pertaining to Jerusalem during the Ottoman Era, particularly those studies that had been, published in the third millennium. Further, the study highlights mainly the most prominent challenges of the contemporary historic documentation of Jerusalem during that period. The significance of this issue stems from not only determining the challenges of the historic documentation of Jerusalem during the Ottoman Era but also opening new horizons for documenting its history during that time according to principles and a methodology that overcome the challenges of the a present historic writings about that period. In addition, the current study present a methodology for a critical reading of the writings on this subject.
