The Effect of Gemination on Vowel Length in Arabic (in Arabic)

Auther : Yahia A. Ahmad

The aim of this paper is to investigate the phonetic properties of gemination in Modern Standard Arabic, and whether gemination has an impact on both the preceding and the following vowel (V1 and V2 respectively). The speech stimuli consisted of 18 words (9 singletons, vs. 9 geminate counterparts). Five items of each group had the syllable patterns CVCVCV, CVCCVCV, and four had the patterns CVVCVCV, CVVCCVCV. Stress in all these tokens has a fixed poison, which is the antepenultimate. Fifteen college students (8 males, 7 females) participated in the production data. Using Praat software, three different measurements were taken: the middle consonant (for both singletons and geminates), V1 and V2. The results revealed that the ratio of singleton to geminate is 1:2.33 in MSA. The study also shows that gemination has a noticeable effect on V1, whereas its effect on V2 is not significant. Contrary to what has been suggested in previous studies, this paper shows that voice is a contributing factor to consonant length in Arabic.
