The Art of Al-Hajaj Ibn Youssef al-Thaqafi's Speeches: A Study in Text Linguistics (in Arabic).

Auther : Laila el-Sabaan

The power of Al-Hajaj al-Thaqafi's oratory skills played an important role in establishing security in Iraq and eliminating sedition. It also forced the people to be obedient. Al-Hajaj turned his words into action and formed his speeches in accordance with the level of understanding of the listeners. Through this method, he was able to convey clear and meaningful messages, which in turn encouraged his listeners to comply with his rules.
This paper studies Al-Hajaj's speeches in light of the five standards of textuality posited by Robert de Beaugrande and Dressler. Each standard is placed under one of the following two categories according to their relationship with the text:
Firstly: That which concerns the user of the text (Intentionality and Acceptability).
Secondly: That which concerns the context of the text (Informativity, Situationality, and Intertextuality).
The integration between the coherence and cohesion of the text creates a necessary threshold for `interpretation' in the interest of Informativity, Situationality, Intentionality and Acceptability. This creation prepares a semantic perspective that can be derived from text linguistics.
This research illustrates Al-Hajaj's way of choosing specific useful words to clarify the meaning behind his speech.
