An Analytical Explanation for the Erroneous Grammatical Queries Rectified by Ibn Wallad al-Masri’s Book, Al-ˈIntisar 332 H. (in Arabic).

Auther : Abed Al-Fatah Aboush

The objective of this research is to identify some grammatical queries about which Al-Mubarad (285 H) proved that Sibawayh (180 H) was mistaken. I have rectified and categorized these queries depending on Ibn Wallad al-Masri’s book, Al-'Intisar 332 H. In this book, Ibn Wallad mentioned 133 issues which Al-Mubarrad used in order to prove that Sibawayh was incorrect. Ibn Wallad, however, defended Sibawayh against Al-Mubarrad.
Through tireless research, comparisons and contrasts, I managed to identify nine more queries which were not mentioned in Sibawayh’s book; these nine queries have also been used by Al-Mubarrad to prove that Sibawayh was wrong. These new queries were not mentioned in Ibn Wallad al-Masri’s book, Al-'Intisar 332 H.
I found seven of these queries in two of Al-Mubarrad’s books: four in Al-Muqtadab [The Concise], and three more in Al-Kamil [The Complete]. I found another one in Ibn Jini’s book Al-Xasa's [The Characteristics] and I found the last one in Lisanu al-Arab [The Arabic Language], a dictionary by Ibn Mandour (710 H). These findings are contrary to what was proposed by Abdelxaliq Adimah, the reviewer of Al-Mubarrad’s book, Al-Muqtadab [The Concise]. In his review of Al-Mubarrad’s book, Abdelxaliq Adimah assertively indicates that there are no other queries (that try to prove Sibawayh was mistaken) other than those mentioned in Ibn Wallad al-Masri’s book, Al-'Intisar 332 H. I put together these queries in my research and organized them in accordance with the chapters of Sibawayh’s book. Afterwards, I analyzed these queries and reviewed their literature, explaining the viewpoints of the main scholars in the field without being biased to any of the viewpoints reviewed. This study does not claim any elevation to the same status of the work of those scholars researched in this study. As a researcher, I know my own limits and do not claim any credit that make my work parallel to that of the scholars mentioned in this study.
