Representations of Femininity in al-Khansa’s Lamentations (in Arabic).

Auther : Fathi Alshormani

This study examines al-Khansa’s lamentations in order to present a new understanding of her femininity. Drawing from concepts of cultural criticism, the paper explores the nature of cultural representation of femininity, as it appears in al-Khansa’s work, and how it reflects the poetic self’s stance on masculinity. Cultural criticism focuses on revealing information hidden within a text, explaining the structural contradictions, and understanding its impactful meaning.
The study is divided into two parts:
A theoretical part, which discusses the concept of cultural representation, the issue of self-representation in the feminine text, and the possibility of concealing the masculinized feminine text that contains non-masculine perceptions.
A practical part that reveals the representation of femininity in al-Khansa’s lamentations and the representation of what counters structural masculinity by detracting from it or feminizing it in order to strip it from the superiority that it attributes to itself. This is accomplished through examining five semantic structures: the feminine-self’s awareness of the body, the image of the woman as a victim, the alienation of the female and the feminization of the masculine, symbolic celebration of femininity, and symbolizing violence.
Keywords: representation, the other, femininity, system, masculinization, Lamentations, Al-Khansa’.
