“Parallel Time” in the Odyssey of Walid Daqqah (in Arabic).

Auther : Abdul-Rahim Al-Shaikh

This article aims to analyze the concept of “parallel time,” which is a philosophical term that depicts life in prison, in juxtaposition with “social time” experienced outside the physical prison walls. The concept was coined by the Palestinian political prisoner Walid Daqqah, born in 1961 in the village of Baqah al-Gharbiyyah and currently in his 35th year of Zionist captivity. The article examines the concept of “parallel time” both in practice and theory as a means of redeeming the imprisoned self from it. Applying indigenous ethnography (for the Palestinian Prisoners’ movement in general and Walid Daqqah in particular) as a method, this article studies “parallel time” and “social time” to provide a critique of the Zionist settler colonial regime. To identify the concept of “parallel time”, the article analyzes three forms of writing (a letter, a lyric, and a play) produced throughout the years 2005, 2011, and 2015. The three pieces provided the article with three defining historical moments through which the dynamics of the Zionist settler colonial regime evolved to control Palestinian time, namely in 1947, 1984, and 2015. In conclusion, the article asserts that Walid Daqqah was able to claim agency by producing knowledge that is capable of ending the lingering “parallel time” and by providing the chance to live the flow of “social time.” As a result, the case of Palestinian political prisoners is turned into a cause of freedom fighters.
Keywords: Parallel time; Walid Daqqah; Palestinian political prisoners; Nakba; settler colonialism.
