Kuwaiti Women Participation in Charity and Social Welfare in the Light of Waqf Documents from: 1263 - 1348 H. / 1847 - 1930 (in Arabic)

Auther : Faisal Al-Kandari

This paper deals with the activities of Kuwaiti women dealing in charity work and how that led the charity institute in Kuwait to flourish and prosper. These charities reflect that most women in Kuwait believed in fulfilling one of Islam’s basic tenet perils, charity work, and that they were very keen to provide the social welfare to those who are in need.

Kuwaiti women’s participation can be classified into five categories: first: in charities (khairy خيري ), they donate a property or a fund as a general donation, e.g. for erecting mosques. Second: (ahli أهلي ) for their relatives or their offsprings. Third: ahli أهلي waqf, if all relatives perish this can be turned into khairy خيري as a general donation. The fourth tenet involves providing meals for poor people on certain days, or slaughtering sheep during festivals accompanying al-Adha Eid. The final category is to free people from slavery and offering them a house to stay in.

The second part of this paper discusses women’s activities in the Kuwaiti society shown in waqf documents appearing in front of the kadi to donate directly, or to express their will to donate to two reliable men who in turn go to the kadi to register that wish. Women also participated in selling and buying properties and shops.

The documents show that Kuwaiti women gave themselves the right to become nadhr alwaqf ناظر الوقف (waqf administrator) that is one who takes care of different sorts of properties and shops, in which they give themselves authorization to administrate the management and the maintenance. The documents express also that a woman can give power of attorney to another woman to take care of the waqf.

Enclosed with this study copies of waqf documents.
