AN EXAMPLE OF YEMENI DIALECT IN WADI HADRAMAUT

Auther : Ali Aqil

This paper represents a preliminary pioneering attempt at studying some of the dialects prevailing in the Yemeni region particularly in Wadi Hadramaut.  The typical qualities of the Hadramaut dialect in terms of its intercalation (Id-Gham), its contradiction, inversion, apposition and deletion are accurately described in this paper.  In addition to the general aspects, which constitute the overall distinguishing characteristic of this dialect, its connection and relation with the classical Arabic language has been also considered.  The paper also discusses the sounds of inclining (IMALAH), the phonetic, etymological and conjugational features of its verbs.   All of such characteristics are exhibited in this paper in almost exactly the same manner in which they are originally practiced amongst Pre-Islamic Arab tribes.  The special Bedouin derivations and uses of the Hadramaut dialect in particular areas of the region are also treated.

The primary objective of this paper therefore is to introduce to researchers and serious students of regional Arab dialects or Arab language philology or the ancient Yemeni language – the most salient features of the Hadramaut dialect and the process by which its unification and merging into the pure classical dialect of Qoraish, is brought about.  Generally speaking, however, this paper is nothing more than a first step in this direction, and it is indeed hoped that it may be followed by more detailed surveys and studies carried out through the combined efforts of linguists, phoneticians and other specialists, under the auspices of Arab Language Academies.
