FACING HOUSING PROBLEMS IN THE DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: THE SAUDI ARABIAN MODEL

Auther : Dr. Khaled Mohammed Al-Anqari

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the factors, which led to the housing problems in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the early seventies and major governmental policies and solutions which were applied to solve those problems within the framework of the housing systems in the developing countries.

Five dimensions which formed the Saudi Arabian house model were analyzed:

1.     planning,

2.     building sites,

3.     building costs,

4.     utilities and services and

5.     integrated communities.

It was found that the distribution of building sites, the government interest-free loans and the completion of most basic infrastructures and services in well-planned residential communities have helped to overcome the housing problems in a very short time.
