A Computational Approach to PronounaffIxation in Arabic verbs

Auther : Salah R. Al-Najem

This paper introduces a computational approach to the phonological and morphological alternations, which occur to Arabic verbs in the inflection process.  This approach is built on a linguistically – motivated formalization for these alternations, which uses syllabification and considers generalizations that govern verb inflection.  These generalizations are related to phonological and morphological aspects of the inflection process.  The computational formalization is implemented using a computational approach designed using Finite-State technique.  In this approach, the phonological rules governing the alternations relating to verb inflection are applied through special computational rules.  Those computational rules are applied using mathematical operations, which are applied on Finite State Transducers. The mathematical operations include union and composition.
