(Travel Literature in Zanzibar, the Search for "One Ummah": An Analytical Reading of "Abu Al-Harith's Travel", Written by Shiehk Mohammed Bin. Ali Bin. Khamis Al-Barwani (1953

Auther : Dr. Mohammed Bin N. Al-Mahrouqi

This research aims at showing the modern time richness of the Arabic travel writings in Zanzibar. It , also, aims at determining the political and cultural factors of that richness. These two aims will be achieved through analyzing the book of Al-Barwani, published first in Zanzibar 1915.

Sultan Barghash Al-Busaidi played an important role in enhancing printing and publishing services in Zanzibar, through establishing the "royal printing", which led to the appearance of the first Arabic newspaper there. This newspaper was called "al-Najah" 1911, and was followed by other newspapers. Sultan Humood. Saeed Al-Busaidi , is another influential political figure who played a key role in this respect. He maintained strong relations with so called "Arabic Renaissances Thinkers" , such as Ridha and Ziydan. Consequently, Zanzibar intellectuals were in a direct contact with the thoughts of those thinkers.

Zanzibari writers produced several travel books, such as "al-Durr al-Mandhum" for Saied Hummod Al- Busaidi and the book of Al-Barwani. Al-Barwani aims at showing his reader the modernity of the main Islamic cities; Cairo and Damascus, in order to set , for this reader an example of the type of modernity that Zanzibar could emulate in her search for identity, which can be called "Ummah Islamyyah" or " One Ummah".
