The City as a Symbol in Arab Gulf Modern Poetry.

Auther : Dr. Abdultawab M. Abdullatif

The attitude towards city occupies a large portion in Arab Gulf modern poetry. Gulf poets use it as a recurrent topic to describe the fast pace of city life and the subsequent disintegration of social relations. The impact of city life is evident on the individual who suffers solitude, loneliness and alienation. The individual has become absorbed in his own problems and grief, leading to a sense of alienation at both the political and social levels and a failure to adapt to the new circumstances of city life. The study consists of an introduction, five sections and a conclusion. The first section tackles city life and the individual's resistance to adapting to the new realities. The second section deals with the city as a symbol of the status quo. The sense of alienation and loss is highlighted in the third section. The fourth section focuses on the conflict between idealism and materialism. The controversial attitudes towards city life are discussed in the fifth section. Finally, there are a conclusion and a bibliography.
