The Impact of Unemployment on Crime The Case of Saudi Arabia
Auther : Mohammad A. Albakr
Employment is commonly thought to deter crime and inhibit problems of delinquency. Thus prominent sociological and psychological theories related to delinquency predict a negative relationship between working, delinquency and crime. Such an assumption is based on premises that involve employment break up of delinquent peer bonds and groups. Moreover, employment seems to be the primary economic cause of self-satisfaction and happiness. The current study analyzes the relationship between unemployment and crime. It depends on data derived from the Central Department of Statistics on population and housing in Saudi Arabia as well as the Statistics Guidebook published by the Department of Planning and Statistics at the Saudi Ministry of Interior. The findings indicate a significant positive effect of unemployment on crime and drug consumption. Moreover, the research evidences the effect of unemployment on drugs in relation to educational status or level, i.e. the lower the educational level of the unemployed, the higher rate of drug consumption.
