The Search for a New Political System for Nigeria:
Auther : Francis G.I.Omiunu
This paper examines the problem of political instability in Nigeria within the context of ethnic pluralism and undemocratic manipulation of the experimentation of previous governmental systems like the unitary, semi-Federal, Federal based on the Westminster model, and Federal democracy based on the American presidential system. It is argued that frequent military coups d`etat could not and cannot solve the country’s problem of political instability since frequent military intervention in the country’s political landscape constitutes, in the main, political instability because of discontinuity of their attendant policies. It is therefore suggested that a confederal system of government will be a viable option as this system could pave the way for a stable federal system in the long run when the citizens would be sufficiently politically mature to realize the need for a federal system
