The Position of Women In Yemeni Society

The study is divided into two parts, the first one deal mainly with the position of women in the society of Natural Yemen from the ancient time of the queen of Sheba until the occurrence of the two modern Revolutions in the North and South Yemen in 1962 and 1963 respectively. Among the subjects covered in part one of this study are womens autonomy in certain areas and limitations to their freedom in others: womens treatments as slaves and commodity; Kafaah marriage: early marriage; polygamy; bride-price: brides as an economic asset in rural areas: oppressive wedding night customs. The emigration of men and its psychological influence on women, and finally the new economic roles of women as a result of male emigration. The second part of the study covers the beginning of Reform Movement in Aden; the effect of the Yemeni revolution on the position of women and in particular, the emancipation of women in Democratic Yemen as embodied in the Constitution 1970 and the 1974 Family Law. Pointing out the more interesting provision in the Law. Such as for example article(9) where marriage may not be concluded where the difference in ages is more than 20 years: and art.(11) which provides that the permission of the court in required before a second marriage may be concluded: or art(25) which abolishes extra-judicial tataq and provides that dissolution of a marriage must be judicial : or art (29) which states that either spouse may petition for dissolution of the marriage, or (b and) which entitles a wife to petition for a judicial decree of dissolution.
