THE DEVELOPMENT OF THINKING IN YOUNG CHILDREN ( FROM PIAGETIAN,S POINT OF VIEW )
Auther : Sayed M . EL-Tawab
How does the children thinking arise , and when ? where does the kind of logic in children’s thinking com from , and how does it change ? these are basic questions have been tired to answer in this article.
However , three different groups of psychologists have been concerned with the development of thinking : intellectual testing movement , those interested in children’s learning , and the cognitive – development theorists who have focused on systematic and sequential changes in child’s logic of thinking .piaget,s theory is the most important one in this area .
Most psychologists working in the area of cognitive development would agree on asset of basic assumptions that emphasize the child’s active role – in the course of development. The sequences of development which seems to be the same for all children can be broken down into four periods :
A. From birth to 2 years , sensor motor period . this period is marked by gradual movement from reflexible to intentional behavior and from absence of internal representation to the beginnings of such representation .
B. From age 2 to 6 , the period that piaget calls preoperational , is the period of transition in which the child’s thinking becomes less egocentric and the ability to classify concepts and objects becomes more complete .
C. From 6 to 12 , the concert operations period , in piaget,s terminology , is marked by the child’s ability to make complex classifications and perform various operations like addition . subtraction and seriation.
D. From age 12 onward , the period that paiget calls formal thinking operations is the time when the child becomes capable of deductive as well as inductive thinking.
