The field –dependent and field independent cognitive styles examined in this study , and their relations to academic performance , are contrasting ways of processing information . whereas the person with a field –dependent style is likely to relay on external referents as guides in information processing , the field independent person tends to give greater credit to internal referents. The ways in which these styles express an individuals standing on the field –dependence - independence dimensions . these tests are : the body – adjustment test , the rod and frame test , the embedded figures test . this study has used the Arabic copy of the group embedded figures test , which the researcher has participated in developing . the population of the study included students from different specialized a reas , both male sand female .
The results of the study has showed that :
1. Male and female students who study sciences and mathematics are relatively more field independent than students who study humanities and languages .
2. Female students who study humanities and languages are relatively more independent than boys who are in the same specialized a reas .
3. Female students who are study sciences and mathematics are relatively more independent than those who study humanities and languages .
4. Male students who study sciences and mathematics are relatively more independent than girls who study humanities and languages .
