The Level of Social and Scholastic Adjustment Among Intermediate School Students in the Province of Nineveh and its Relation to Scholastic Achievement

Auther : Tareq Ramzi

The study sought to explore the exact relationship between level of school social adjustment of Nineveh secondary school students (ages 13-22) and their scholastic achievement.

Two hypothesis were established in order to achieve study aims. The original School Adjustment inventory (SSAT) , (81 Items) was utilized to measure school adjustment in this study. The inventory was tried out, and item analyzed on (150) students, randomly selected from secondary schools in Nineveh city. The modified form of the inventory consisted of (69) items. Reliability (split-half) was established for the modified inventory (r = 0.92) on (85) secondary school students in Nineveh City.

Objectivity of students’ responses on the inventory for both reliability sample, and basic research sample (269) students, randomly selected from eight secondary schools, was studied before the results were analyzed, using an “Objectivity Scale” as criterion score (5 on the Scale) which is corresponding to the upper 5% in the normal distribution of objectivity scores, to eliminate those who are faking good on the Inventory. Therefore, results were finally analyzed in accordance with (231) students.

Result of the study showed that:

1- The modified School Social Adjustment Inventory has a high degree of homogeneity for its (64) items and for (5) objectivity Scale items (based on item analysis, and split – half reliability methods).

2- Level of school social adjustment is significantly and positively related to level of academic achievement of students. (r = 0.318, beyond 0.01 level of confidence).

3- The two groups – the high and the low school adjustment students are significantly differentiated in their academic achievement.
