A Profile of the Board of Directors in the Kuwaiti Business Sector

Auther : RR.Refaie/ M.Hamoud

Economic development in the area Gulf as a whole, and in Kuwait unparticular has placed increasing responsibilities on the business sector; especially the big companies that own and direct10-1/1982 most of the Kuwaiti wealth. Leadership in those companies is naturally the main factor in their success in meeting the challenges of the international business community. So an assessment of this leadership and its characteristics is necessary at this stage of development. The main purpose of this paper is to examine closely the board of directors, in 37 big companies (prepaid capital exceeded 5 million K.D.) to determine the level of education, age range, compensation system, and female participation in the boards, and to determine the effects of those factors on the decision making process. The paper found many positive Indicators regarding board embers, such as the homogeneity of the group in terms of age. Most of them were found to be middle aged with college education. Although education could be a positive indicator, youth could be viewed as a drawback, because of the lack of experience in most cases. The study also showed minimal female contribution in business, which could be explained by the rigid social norms in the society. The legal requirements for ownership usually prevent experienced outsiders from sharing in leadership. Finally the paper concluded that the compensation system is not adequate for the responsibility the boards undertake.
