Prophet Leadership and Ideal Types of Authority A study in Islamic Political

Auther : N. Abdul Khalek

This study is built on the idea that there is a spelt of comparison between the leadership of the Prophet and charismatic leadership, especially in the “Crisis of Succession”. The author also considers that the concept of “charisma” is closely connected to the general mood of Islamic society and thought. This idea is important, especially in regard to the way in which Islamic society treats some political problems, such as legitimacy, institutionalization, political opposition and modernization.

This study aims to  investigate the idea that Islamic society and thought is lacking in the process of institutional of political life and in governing institutions, it is dependent on a despotic personal leadership. The concepts of Max Weber  relating to power and authority have been used to interpret and analysis how Islamic society has some social and political problems.

The study concludes that Islamic society is very sensitive to charismatic motivation. This greatly affects the way that Islamic society has treated some social and political problems, such as legitimacy, institutionalization, political opposition and modernization.

However, nowadays there are many elements that encourage the institutionalization of an Islamic society and state.
