Learning Difficulties of Elementary Students from the Viewpoint of Special Education

The field of learning disabilities is now considered to be one of the most important areas in special education, Yet few research studies on its theory and application have been conducted in the Arab World.

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the problem of learning difficulties as experienced by children at the elementary level, in order to stimulate research on this topic and propose suitable solutions. The problem is a serious one, as it has been estimated that at least 3% of elementary pupils face some kind of learning difficulty.

Learning disabilities can be categorized as:

A) Perceptual disorders, such as an inability to discriminate between alphabetical letters, or numbers, and a corresponding difficulty with writing.

B) Conceptual disorders.

C) Hyperactivity.

D) Neurological signs.

E) Dyslexia and dysgraphia.

F) Language delay and deficiency.

A theoretical framework of the problem of learning disabilities faced by elementary students is presented from the viewpoint of special education, including its definition, prevalence, asoects, causes, assessment and evaluation, and remedial teaching programs.
