Towards a theory of Islamic Consumer Behaavior

Auther : Boualem Bendjilali , Farid Bachir

This study constitutes one step toward the establishment of a systematic and rigorous analysis of the behavior of a Muslim consumer. It first establishes the main axioms that govern the behavior of Muslim consumer. These are divided into two types: strong and weak axioms which are deduced directly from the teaching of the Quran and Sunnah. A utility map is then based on these axioms, and has as its domain the commodity set which is made up of goods allowed by the Sharia only. This map may take one of four distinct shapes according to the types of goods as classified by the Sharia. The study also introduces a new dimension in the utility function by introducing a new variable called thawab. This is built into the utility function of the Muslim consumer, and consequently distinguishes the Muslim utility map from the conventional one.
