Experimental Study of the Effects of Traditional and Behavioral Approaches in Social Work
Auther : Abdel-Aziz F. Elnouhy
The purpose of the research is to compare two interventive approaches to casework in terms of their effectiveness. These are the traditional approach and the behavioral approach, which has rarely been used in Arab countries.
Six primary and intermediate schools were selected to take part in the experiment; from these schools a number of social workers had received prior training in the behavior approach by the researcher. During one school year a total of 51 students with a variety of behavioral problems were referred at random to social workers using either the traditional or behavioral approach. The results revealed that the behavioral approach is more effective and requires less total interview time, although no significant differences appeared between the two approaches in terms of case recording and number of interviews with clients. The content analysis of supervisors’ reports revealed that the behavioral approach was applied successfully in the schools.
