Auther : Amal. Y. AL-Sabah , Mostafa H. EL-Shalakani
As a part of an ongoing field study of labor migration to kuwait, a representative random sample of 3092 migrants working in the government sector provides data to describe various socio-economic and demographic aspects of labor migration to Kuwait.
The paper starts with an introduction to the topic of labor migration and presents the need to formulate a new population policy in Kuwait.
The work proceeds as follows: First, it describes the impact of the recent Gulf War on expatriate labor force-specifically their living conditions during the Iraqi occupation. Second, several factors that are expected to affect working environment in Kuwait are analyzed. Third, official measurements, guidelines and policies influencing employment of migrant workers as well as those determining their effective use are discussed. Short as well as long term economic development policies are also explored.
