The Effect of Directed Inquiry in Developing Curiosity, Creative Abilities, and Science Achievement on 4th Grade Elementary School Students in Kuwait .

Auther : Salah Mourad / Fawziyah Hadi

The study aimed at promoting curiosity, creativity, and scientific achievement by using a directed inquiry method in teaching 4th grade students. Two units from the 4th grade science curriculum were prepared according to directed inquiry. Two scales for measuring verbal and figural curiosity were developed and piloted twice, and their reliabilities were (.72,.76) and (.80,.78) respectively. An achievement test was developed with a reliability of.91. Four classes of 4th grade students were chosen from two schools (one male school, and one female school). The program was administered in two classes used as experimental groups. Curiosity scales and creativity tests were administered to all four classes before and after the program.

Results showed that the experimental groups scored higher than the control groups regarding curiosity, flexibility, originality, and achievement. Boys scored higher than girls in verbal curiosity, flexibility, and originality. Significant relationships were found between verbal curiosity, and fluency, flexibility, and elaboration, while figural curiosity correlated only with elaboration. Achievement correlated highly with curiosity and all creative abilities.
