The Political Participation of Jordanian Women : The Participation of Jordanian Women in Municipal Elections (2007-2013)

This study aims to identify the Jordanian women's participation in municipal elections, and Jordanian women's representation in municipal councils, and the impact of women's quota in Municipalities law on Jordanian women's representation, and the obstacles to women's participation in political life. The study used descriptive and analytical approach through description and analysis of the women's quota system, and the extent of their impact on women's representation in municipal councils, and the study used the legal approach, through dealing with women's quota in the Municipalities law as the legal texts that help women to participate in politics. The study concluded that the Municipalities law granted Jordanian women the right to vote and the right to run for the presidency and the membership of municipal councils, and granted Jordanian women a number of additional seats (women's quota), and women's quota in Municipalities law reflected positively on the participation and representation of Jordanian women in the municipal elections and in municipal councils, the study recommended the continued application of the women's quota system in Municipalities law, and increase the number of additional seats (women's quota) for women in Municipalities law, and hold awareness and training courses for women members of the municipal councils.
