Happiness and Job Satisfaction and their Relationships with Emotional Intelligence among Workers in the State of Kuwait

Auther : Abdulrahman Alfalah

Research has suggested that emotional intelligence (EI) plays a crucial role in work settings. However, no study has investigated the relationship between EI and Job Satisfaction and Happiness in Kuwait. The participants voluntarily participated in the research during their work time, and comprised 174 males and 39 females, aged between 24 to 57 years (M = 37.25 years, SD = 7.83). The results indicated that employees tended to be more externally satisfied (like the relationship with direct manager and co-workers) than to be internally satisfied. Moreover, feeling of enthusiasm and optimism seemed to affect their happiness at work more than their feeling of relax. Regarding the research hypotheses, emotion regulation "as part of EI" showed the best associations with job satisfaction and Happiness. That is, those who showed high score on emotion regulation are more likely to be internally and externally satisfied, feel enthusiasm, and have less feeling of anxiety and depression. On the other hand, appraisal of other's emotion was not found to have a significant association with any of the study factors. Finally, self appraisal of emotion was found to have significant relationships with enthusiasm, depression, and anxiety. Thus, these findings could be a basis for more useful aims such as increasing job satisfaction and well-being by manipulating emotional intelligence.
