The Role of Education in Opportunity Development in Egypt (2000-2012)
Auther : Samy El Sayed Ebtehal A. Abd-Almoity Abeer M. Elprince
Education is a key policy instrument to reduce poverty and inequalities, because it helps individuals to access better jobs, raise their labor earnings, and improve their standards of living; therefore, the current study examines the role of education in improving opportunities in Egypt (2000 - 2012), through a number of steps: (1) measuring and mapping the change of spatial distribution of opportunity across Egyptian governorates by using the Multidimensional Opportunity Index (MOI) to measure educational opportunities, "jobs and economics" opportunities, and total opportunities; (2) using the Human Opportunity Index (HOI) to measure educational opportunities as well as jobs and economic inequalities among the various governorates; and (3) implementing the Least Squares Dummy Variable (LSDV) regression model on the level of Egyptian governorates. Results show that the educational opportunities in about %63 of Egyptian governorates have significant impacts (positive in %45 of the governorates, and negative in %18 of governorates) on jobs and economic opportunities.
