Scientific Journals Issued by Umm Al-Qura University and the Extent of their Conformity to the International Standards of Quality
Auther : Abdulhady Al Eidaroos Khaled Matook
This study aims to determine the standard specifications of academic scientific journals and to explore the challenges towards applying the Arab Journal impact factor to intellectual production in refereed periodicals. These standards were then used to evaluate seven scientific journals issued by Umm Al-Qura University. Results of the analysis showed that the standard specifications of scientific journals are not properly applied in these journals in terms of publishing on time, the lack of existing abstracts in English in a large proportion of the published studies, the lack of information systems for the retrieval of contents, and the lack of information about researchers in some of the journals or even an authors' summary. A more important limitation is in the citation of references in all papers in the investigated Arabic journals where there is no particular rules used for scientific references, which cause problems in producing Arabic citation indexing. The study recommends unifying the publishing rules in scientific journals issued in Arabic in order to be compatible with the international trends in the dissemination of information sources, in particular in terms of recording references in texts and in citations, which will help to produce citation indexing and the Arab impact factor. In addition, work needs to be done to provide a computerized catalogue to record the content of journals as such journals need to be made available in both electronic and printed forms.
