Counseling Needs among a Sample of Elderly Kuwaitis

The general aim of this study was to estimate the counseling needs in a sample of elderly Kuwaitis (N=366), aged between 60 and 90 years. They responded to the Kuwaiti Checklist of Problems and Counseling Needs, which consists of five subscales including the counseling needs (16 items). The percentage of persons who endorsed one or the other of items ranged from 20.5% to 60.3%. Gender-related differences were significant only in two items. The needs of the elderly were classified into three categories - namely health, social relations, and entertainment. More than half of the men and women in the sample chose the health-related item which reports the patient's need for"Selecting caring doctors".Based on the five items with the highest frequency, it was found that men choose the items related to health, whereas women favored the items connected with social aspects. The counseling needs were significantly and positively correlated with physical diseases, psychological disorders, problems with offspring, and social problems. The study recommends fulfilling the elderly needs to reach successful aging.
