Auther : Fatima Al-Maddadi Fathi Ihmeideh

This study aimed at investigating the reasons underlying the reluctance of children, youth and their parents or guardians from participation in the programs and activities introduced by the Childhood Cultural Center, which is considered one of the main cultural centers in the State of Qatar. It also intends to explore the relationship between reasons of reluctance and the participants' demographic variables. Moreover, the study aimed at identifying the children and youth and their parents needs in order to improve the activities and programs provided by the Childhood Cultural Center. The study sample was randomly selected from independent schools in Doha, Qatar and consisted of 348 children and youth and 351 parents or guardians. To achieve the study aims, the two researchers developed a special questionnaire. Results showed that degree of agreement among the children, youth and their parents on the factors of reluctance was moderate on all the domains of the questionnaire. The educational factors were considered by the children and youth to be the most important factors for such reluctance, followed by social factors, while the parents or the guardians considered the factors related to the Childhood Cultural Center as the most important reasons for this reluctance, followed by familial factors. Furthermore, the results revealed significant differences between the degree of agreement between the children and youth about all the factors of reluctance on the one hand, and the degree of agreement among the parents or guardians on the other, which was in favor of parents or guardians. The findings also indicated statistically significant differences due to some demographic factors for the children, youth and parents. Finally, the results indicated that childrenand youth expressed their need for activities and programs related to technological and scientific research, while parents expressed the need for activities that focused on all educatinal stages and not only on one learning stage. The study ended by providing specific recommendations for cultural centers, schools, researchers for promoting the programs and activities provided by the Childhood Cultural Center.
